MATTRESS MAKEOVER: Fact or Fiction ... We should always sleep on a firm mattress?

Good Morning Chuckle: Yo mama so stupid she got locked in a mattress store and slept on the floor!

Did you grow up with the message that you should always sleep on a firm mattress?
I know I did ... and I took it literally.
It is only now as "Lisa The Linen Lady" (a comfort consultant with Private Quarters) that I am learning about sleep disturbance issues, bedding issues, mattress issues etc. and want to share a couple of thoughts!

A firm mattress ... Hmm???
Does that mean it should be as "hard as a rock" or as "stiff as a board"?
I think it's really meant to imply that we don't want saggy, baggy, lumpy, bumpy, or loosey goosey springs in our mattress! We want a mattress that is firm enough to support our body weight and keep our body/neck/head/shoulders in alignment.
No huge dips or craters in the mattress desired/allowed!

But the truth of the matter is ... the older we get, the more cush we may want on our beds.  WHY?
Because over time we develop pressure points!
(i.e. known as bed sores in the hospital when they have gone to the extreme)
Only certain points of our body actually touch the mattress & support our body weight.
These are the points where circulation gets constricted and thus become sore over time (with age!)
Adding a layer of cush (like a featherbed or fiber bed) will cradle the body the way a pillow cradles the head ... allowing the circulation to flow more freely.

BENEFIT: Can help relieve the discomfort or pain of the pressure points!

MY GOAL: to help you "sleep like a baby, cradled in comfort" ~ every night ~ in your own bed at home!

Thanks for helping me make my bed ‘sleepable’.  I've suffered for years with fibromyalgia & had been unable to find a bedding solution.  My husband needs a firm mattress, but I need a soft bed or am sore during the night and in pain when I wake up.  The bedding you sold us has solved our problem.
I am pain free for the first time in years!!  It’s amazing!!

There are 2 kinds of sleepers ... people who sleep well & those who don't! Which kind are you?

Did you know that the average person spends more than 10,000 hours sleeping throughout their lifetime? That’s a third of our life. How we feel during the day greatly depends on how we sleep at night. Most Americans, however, still don’t recognize the critical role sleep plays for good health. In fact, up until the mid 1900’s, most scientists believed that sleep was an inactive state that had little or no value –  just something we did when the sun set. Things are beginning to change, however, now that we as a society are starting to feel the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation.

According to the national sleep foundation, there is a national sleep disturbance epidemic in the USA. Americans are spending over 3 billion dollars a year on sleep medications. 50% of couples have temperature incompatibility (a nightly tug of war with the covers). And 6 out of 10 men/women suffer with insomnia issues relating to tension/stress, tossing & turning, temperature, night sweats, asthma/allergies, and from the aches & pains of age, surgeries, arthritis, diabetes, or fibromyalgia.

Of those 10,000 hours, how many nights do you lie awake because of trouble sleeping?
What would a good night’s sleep be worth to you?

TODAY’S TIP:  Sleep Deprivation Quiz: Are you getting enough sleep every night?
If you answer “yes” to more than 3 of the following questions, you may not be getting the kind of sleep you need for good health! If this is the case, it's never too late to “wake-up” to the implications of poor sleep and determine to create new habits that support your health and quality of life.

Do you ...
Have trouble falling asleep at night?
Use alcohol to help you get to sleep?
Have to use an alarm clock to wake up in the morning?
Wake up feeling tired and unrefreshed in the morning?
Drink coffee or energy drinks to stay awake during the day?
Fall asleep while watching TV?
Feel irritable or depressed much of the time?
Feel like you have trouble focusing on the job?
Feel like you're not getting anything done?
Seem to have frequent accidents at home or in your car?
Feel like you have to take a nap every day?

Have trouble staying asleep?

Mental Mindset Makeover ~ Make Sleep a Priority!

Private Quarters "Blissful Bed"
7 layers of comfort

Allow me to introduce myself!
I am Lisa the Linen Lady – “the linen store that comes to the door, changing people’s lives by changing their beds”
In my current role, as an independent “comfort consultant” with Private Quarters (www.lisamorgan.privatequarters.net), I teach my customers the “comfort secrets” of luxury hotels and how to transform one’s mattress into the ultimate sleep experience! With Private Quarters' “blissful bed” sleep system, I am able to provide bedding solutions which enhance one’s comfort and provide a more restful night’s sleep.
During the 80’s & 90’s, in my career as a Music Therapist in the general hospital setting, I taught relaxation techniques to patients dealing with anxiety, pain, and discomfort. And in my practice as a certified life strategy coach (2002-2006), I helped many people change their lives by becoming aware of belief systems, patterns, habits, and perspectives which were holding them back from achieving their desired goals and dreams.

Today … It is my desire to bring together these 3 areas of expertise in my blog … sharing information, tips and techniques on how to add more comfort to our lives and beds!

Today’s Tip:  Mental Mindset Makeover ~ Make sleep a priority!

The first step for getting a good night’s sleep is to become aware of the importance sleep plays in one's health & well being and make it a priority.  A restful night’s sleep has recuperative & restorative powers that are as important to our health as is diet and exercise. Without it, we are more prone to engage in unhealthy behaviors and habits which lead to sickness and degrade our over all health. So determine how much sleep you and your family need every night and make sure you get it!
